The Municipal Photograph Collection ranges in date from 1945 to 1980 and covers many subjects from Oak Ridge’s history. A majority of the images illustrate activities of the early Recreation Department, including the outdoor pool construction, Roane-Anderson sports teams and the Playground Circus. Activities of Oak Ridge Fire, Police, Public Health and Public Works departments show fire fighters, riot drills, rabies clinics, road repair and building construction.
Several photographs depict the “E” Award ceremony that took place on November 20th, 1945 at Blankenship Field. Early bus operations are shown with photos of terminals and maintenance buildings. Sixteen photos illustrate the October 1963 ceremony for the commissioning of the U. S. S. Oak Ridge, which was an ARD-12-class floating dry dock.
These images were donated to the Library by other city departments and expanded the Library’s collection of historical images. Archived originals may be a different size than noted in description. Notes on originals are taken from archived copies.
